Ecologies of Mark-Making

In this year long, process-led body of research, Richards explores the experience of physically moving in relation to making. Focusing on the body-based nature of process art, she creates works in sketchbooks that she considers with equal value to more classically ‘resolved’ works. She explores the idea of walking as work, creating visual and aesthetic responses to this.

Intertwined with this is the background of the spiritual. Creating contemplative places for thought-bordering-on-meditation is something foundational to the practice. The action of walking often becomes that place, with visual works representing both process and contemplation.

Each visual work in this body is an ecology of shape, mark and colour as a response to walking experiences. Often made very quickly, in response to very slow observation and movement.
